When Preservation Hits a Pane Point - Dealing with Windows and Asbestos
The original goal was to save all the windows throughout the house. However, it was discovered that the caulking along the windows had too much asbestos, so they all needed to be removed.
Windows during the inspection
We also had a stained glass window that was added in the 1920’s when a chimney was removed. The window was removed during demolition, and the decision on replacing it, vs restoring to a more original version of the house is an ongoing decision.
Both cases show the challenges of balancing the goal of restoration with the reality of how the house changed over time.
